Digital Marketing Plan Template

The Hook: I Wasted $200K on a Plan That Never Got Used

In 2015, I paid a “marketing expert” $30K to create a comprehensive marketing plan. It was beautiful. 87 pages. Beautiful graphics. Theworks. Then it sat in a drawer. Literally—someone put it in a drawer because “we had too much going on.”

Since then, I’ve realized: The best marketing plan isn’t the most comprehensive—it’s the one that gets USED.

Here’s the plan template I now use with every client—one that actually gets implemented, tracked, and adjusted.

The Digital Marketing Plan Template

Section 1: Business Foundation

BEFORE strategy—even before marketing—you need clarity on what you’re building.

1.1 Your One-Year Goal

Revenue target: $____

New customers: ____

Primary objective: [Get more customers / Retain existing / Launch new product]

1.2 Target Customer Profile

Who: [Job title, industry, company size]

Problem they have: ____

How you solve it: ____

1.3 Unique Value Proposition

Complete this: “We help [target] achieve [result] by [method] in [timeframe]”

Section 2: Channel Strategy

You can’t do everything. Pick your channels—not based on what’s popular, but based on where YOUR customers are.

Channel Primary Goal Monthly Budget KPI Target
[e.g., Email] Nurture/Convert $200/mo 5% conversion
[e.g., LinkedIn] Awareness Time only 1000 views
[e.g., PPC] Acquisition $1000/mo $50 CPA
Pro Tip: Don’t pick more than 3 channels. Yes, 3. If you’re overwhelmed, you won’t execute.

Section 3: Content Calendar

Strategy without execution is fantasy. This section makes it real.

Monthly Content Themes

Week 1: [Theme/Promo]

Week 2: [Theme/Content]

Week 3: [Theme/Social]

Week 4: [Theme/Email]

Weekly Output Goals

Blog posts: __ per week

Social posts: __ per week

Emails: __ per week

Videos: __ per week

Section 4: Budget & Resources

Money talks. This section makes it real.

Monthly Marketing Budget

Paid media: $________

Tools/software: $________

Content creation: $________

Outsourcing: $________

Total: $________

Section 5: Metrics & Tracking

What gets measured gets managed. Pick your KPIs.

Monthly KPIs to Track

Total revenue: $ ____

New customers: ____

Cost per acquisition: $ ____

Website traffic: ____

Email open rate: __%

Conversion rate: __%

IMPORTANT: Review your metrics weekly. Adjust strategy monthly. Keep what works, kill what doesn’t.

Marketing Plan Mistakes

Mistake #1: 87 Pages of Nothing

You’re creating a beautiful document that never gets used. Plans should be 5-10 pages MAX. The rest is execution.

Fix: One-page plans get used. Long plans get filed away.

Mistake #2: No Budget

Your plan has strategies but no dollar amounts. Without budget, it’s a wish list.

Fix: Put real numbers. Even estimates force prioritization.

Mistake #3: Wrong Metrics

You’re tracking likes, shares, followers—none of which connect to revenue. Track what impacts the business.

Fix: Primary metric = revenue. Secondary = related leading indicators.

Mistake #4: No Review Cadence

You create the plan and never look at it again. A plan without reviews is a decoration.

Fix: Schedule monthly 30-minute reviews. No exceptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should the plan be?

5-10 pages MAX. The shorter, the more likely you’ll use it. I prefer one-page plans with appendices for details.

When should I update the plan?

Review monthly. Major updates quarterly. The plan is a living document, not a one-time event.

Should I hire someone to create it?

Only if you have the budget AND will implement. But you’re better off creating it yourself with guidance—then you’ll actually use it.
